Why Does My Wearable Keep Saying I'm Stressed?
You feel fine. You slept, you're not worried about anything in particular, and your ring or watch still opens with a red "stressed" badge. This is a common mismatch, and it comes from how these scores are built, not from a flaw in how you feel.
What a wearable actually measures when it says "stressed"
A wearable's stress score is not a measurement of stress. It's a score built from heart rate variability (HRV), the variation in time between consecutive heartbeats, which the device runs through a proprietary formula and labels as "stress," "strain," or "readiness." The label implies a psychological read. What's actually being measured is a physiological signal that shifts for many reasons, of which feeling stressed is only one.
HRV is controlled by the autonomic nervous system, the part of your nervous system that adjusts heart rate, digestion, and other involuntary functions without your input. When your body shifts toward a more activated state (sometimes called "fight or flight"), HRV tends to drop. When it shifts toward rest and recovery, HRV tends to rise. A device reads that drop and reports it as elevated stress, because activation is one of the things that lowers HRV. It's just not the only thing.
Why HRV-based scores can't tell stress apart from other causes
An HRV-based score can't distinguish psychological stress from other events because the underlying signal, autonomic activation, looks similar on the graph whether it's caused by an argument, a hard workout, a fever, or a glass of wine. The algorithm sees a lowered HRV and applies the same "stressed" label regardless of what triggered it.
This is a known limitation of using a single physiological proxy to represent a subjective state. Stress, in the way people use the word, is an emotional and cognitive experience. HRV is a downstream effect of nervous system activity that responds to that experience, but also to dozens of other things happening in the body at the same time. A score built on one signal has no way to ask "why," it can only report "lower than usual" and pick a word for it.
Common non-stress reasons for a high stress reading
A high stress score can come from any of the following, none of which involve feeling stressed:
- Exercise, including recent exercise. Hard training lowers HRV during and after the session, sometimes into the following day, and shows up as a stress reading rather than a training effect.
- Illness, including the early signs before you feel sick. Your immune system's response to an infection activates the same nervous system pathways that lower HRV.
- Alcohol. Alcohol is one of the most consistent HRV suppressors. A single evening of drinking can lower HRV that night and into the next morning, which a wearable reads as stress rather than as a downstream effect of drinking.
- Medication. Some medications affect heart rate or the autonomic nervous system as a side effect, which can shift HRV independent of anything psychological.
- Poor sleep or a shifted sleep schedule. Sleep debt affects the same nervous system balance that HRV tracks, so a bad night can read as a stressful day.
- Dehydration, caffeine, or simply an unusual day. Any of these can nudge HRV enough to trip a "stressed" label.
None of this means the score is broken. It's doing what it's built to do: watch one signal and flag when it moves. The gap is between what it flags and what it calls that flag.
Why the same score can mean different things week to week
The same "high stress" reading can mean something different from one week to the next because the score reflects whatever is currently lowering your HRV, and that cause changes. One week it might follow a hard training block. The next it might follow a cold, a few late nights, or a weekend where you drank more than usual. The number looks the same. The reason behind it doesn't.
This is why reading a stress score in isolation, without the context of what else was happening that day, tells you that something shifted but not what. Two weeks with identical scores can have nothing else in common.
What logging alongside the score adds that the score alone can't
Logging the things that affect HRV next to the score itself is what turns "the score is high" into "the score is high, and here's what was probably driving it." A stress score by itself is a single number. Once you can see it next to a workout, a night of drinking, a medication change, or the start of a cold, the number stops being a mystery and starts being explainable.
